U.C. Berkeley Sprints, U.C. Berkeley, Berkeley, Wednesday 11/11/2009

Golden Gate Getaway: program | blog | register | postcard front / backflyer | terraloco home

Original Announcement:

This event is being hosted by CHAOS, the Cal Hiking And Outdoor Society.

Ben Legg has redone the campus map to sprint standard - no simple task! Be the first to enjoy the fruits of his work on some technically demanding campus terrain with lots of twists. He's setting the courses too.

Details:

Registration spot: Memorial Glade, the big grassy lawn near the center of campus, just north of the Doe library.

Registration is open at 3:00; a recreational "micro-O course" will be available.

Main event: a chasing sprint at 4:15, mandatory briefing at 4:00 if you want to participate.

Cost $5, or included if you're registered for the whole week.

For information about disabled access, contact Ben Legg, bleggphys@yahoo.com.

Social afterwards at La Val's Pizza.

Course Setter's Notes and more info from Ben:

Wednesday is Veterans Day, so if you have the day off work, you should consider dropping by! This will probably be the only public orienteering held at U.C. Berkeley this year, and we are expecting a nice turnout of university students.

I have completely remapped UC Berkeley to International Sprint Standards, and I'm setting a very tricky little 2.6 km sprint course with some "micro orienteering" portions. I will also have a fun little map reading game available to try. The event is listed as one of Rex's Golden Gate Getaway training events.

The start/finish/registration area will be in Memorial Glade: the large grass field in front of the main campus libary. This is just slightly downhill and north of the large clock tower. The easiest way to get there is to park north of campus (near the intersection of Hearst and Euclid) and then walk south toward the libary. Street parking is free because of the holiday.

I'll be there starting at 3:00 P.M. and we'll keep courses open until 5:00 P.M. Be sure to arrive before 4:15, when I will have a mass start chase event for those who wish to participate (or merely watch - I am arranging this for good spectating.)  After it gets dark, we will head for a social dinner just north of campus at La Val's - a relaxed outdoor dining establishment with affordable pizza, pasta, burritos, and beer.

Hope to see you there!

Ben

Directions:

From Interstate 80 in Berkeley, take University Ave. east. When it dead ends at the University of California, Berkeley campus, turn left on Oxford St. Then turn right on Hearst St. at the edge of campus. Follow Hearst up the hill to Euclid, where there's a little shopping district. Park for free (because of the Veteran's Day holiday - even at parking meters) near this intersection on the street. Then head down into campus from the corner of Euclid and Hearst - you'll walk right into Memorial Glade.

The University Ave. exit on Interstate 80 and exits on Highway 24 will get you on the way towards campus. The university has a visitors page with directions and parking information. Due to the Veteran's Day holiday parking on city and neighborhood streets is free and unlimited, even at meters, but that doesn't necessarily make it simple - hunting around for a spot is common, the further you get from campus, the easier it gets.

Public Transit:

BART will get you to downtown Berkeley. (Do not use the North Berkeley station.) From the Berkeley BART station, it's about a 15 minute walk to Memorial Glade in the campus. The AC Transit 1 or 1R line (1R is quicker) will drop you off at the south entrance to campus, a somewhat shorter walk to the registration point. The university has a visitors page with more transit information.
