What a surprisingly mild evening - even when I was picking up
the flags after 9:00, it felt pretty comfortable. And folks had fun
romping around the newish "digital arts" campus corner of the Presidio,
along with the main post and other areas close to Sports Basement.
Thanks to Liz and Patty at Sports Basement for getting us well set up
with snacks and drinks and the 20% discount!
I think the sprint courses worked out well given the
constraints of the 1:10000 map and the area. I did make about 25 map
corrections in OCAD after checking and adjusting the course the day of
the event. Course 1 ended up being 2.4 km and quite fast, Mikkel
cleared it in 14 minutes 17 seconds. Course 2 ended up being shorter at
2.0 km, and it took Mikkel 16 something minutes to complete. No other
times were reported.

What's the Deal?
Enjoy two "sprint" courses totaling 5
km using the more urban parkland in the northeast corner of
the Presidio. While the checkpoint locations are technically
pretty easy to identify, choosing the best route and
executing it efficiently will be quite interesting, so it
will be a fun challenge for beginners, intermediates, and
experienced navigators. Running shoes and shorts are fine -
no roughing it in the woods. A fair amount of paved
running, some grassy areas, some unpaved trails. Each course
will be marked with small pin flags.
Course 1: 9 checkpoints, 2.5 km, 20 m
climb
Course 2: 7 checkpoints, 2.4 km, 40 m climb
We'll meet at the Sports
Basement store located near
Crissy Field. There will be a short, streamered hike
crossing underneath the elevated highway to a remote
start/finish point with a clock and a pen if you'd like to
time yourself.
Thanks to Sports
Basement for giving all
participants a 20% shopping discount! And any interested,
we'll pick an establishment in the nearby Marina district
for socializing afterward.
Courses open 6:00 to 8:00; cost is
$5.
Directions:
To get to Sports
Basement by car:
101 North through San Francisco is Van
Ness Ave. I prefer taking Franklin, a block over to the
west. Both connect with Lombard St. towards the north end of
the city, where you make a left. After about a mile on
Lombard, you continue onto the highway that connects to the
Golden Gate Bridge - "Doyle Drive" - for almost half a mile.
Make a slight left toward Marshall St. (follow signs for
Presidio - Crissy Field.) Turn right at Marshall St.,
then turn left at Mason St., and go about a quarter mile and
Sports Basement will be on your left.
By bike: A nice route from
downtown is to take the waterfront all the way around to
Crissy Field, then look for Sports Basement on the
left.
As there is no SF Muni rail line
nearby, nor a major bus line, it's not the easiest place to
get to via public transit, but you can try 511.org's
trip planner and see how you do.
