Brrr... gotta keep moving in the fog
with a significant wind chill. Participants participated
vigorously. Since there were 4 loops, I could see them
come and go on each loop. Each had a different adventure,
and most had tricky navigation, some of which had to do with
the map needing updating. Afterwards, we gathered at a
gastropub in the Haight, but moved on when learning of the
one hour waitlist down the street to a crepes
joint.

Announcement
What's the Deal?
Aren't we fortunate to have a
BAOC
map of one of the world's premier urban parks?
Come enjoy a fun romp in Golden Gate
Park with lots of people - last year we had about 25 on a
summer evening. And this time we're using the
easier-to-get-to east end of the park.
This will be a different style of
event than the BAOC meet held in June.
It will be a motala course (several
loops, various orders of doing them) with optional mini mass
starts and possibly forking. Meaning, you could be starting
together with people, but not able to follow them the whole
way. You may do the course self-starting or wait a few
minutes for a group to gather to go with. Going with the
group provides the added training benefit of what I'll call
"distraction" on your course.
There will be lots of decision making
to entertain you on the course, using combinations of
obstacles in the terrain to make the routing interesting.
I'm aiming to make 4 loops, about 1.5
km each, and you can do as many as you want.
Details:
- Cost is $5 per person.
- Registration and starts open at
6:00, mass start option is 6:45, courses close 8:00, or
earlier, if people are finished.
- Gear: shorts and regular
running shoes are okay, but bring pants if you can't
stand any vegetation brushing your legs, there might be a
little bit of that.
- Checkpoints are small colored
flags staked in the ground about 1 foot high.
- Map from BAOC
is 1:7500 scale and has some mild hills.
- Social option afterwards around
9th and Irving or in the Lower Haight.
Directions:
We're convening at the Dahlia Dell
picnic site. It is located near the Conservatory of Flowers
on the eastern side of the park, not very far from the
eastern end of JFK Drive.
From Northbound Highway 101: Take the
101 North/Golden Gate Bridge exit in San Francisco, which
becomes Octavia St at Market St. Stay on Octavia for a few
blocks, and turn left onto Fell St. Follow Fell St west for
1.5 miles into Golden Gate Park. After it enters the park,
bear right / turn right to get on John F. Kennedy Drive. It
will come up very soon! Look for a terraloco sign and/or a
orange and white control bag; park nearby, then follow the
streamers to the picnic site called Dahlia Dell.
Public Transit: Take the 5 Fulton SF
Muni bus to Stanyan; walk south on Stanyan, turn right onto
Fell, then turn right onto John F. Kennedy Drive. Look
for a terraloco sign and/or a orange and white control bag;
park nearby, then follow the streamers to the picnic site
called Dahlia Dell. You can also take the N Judah SF Muni
rail line from any of the downtown BART stations; get off at
Cole, which is the first stop after exiting the tunnel. (Not
the tunnel shared with BART, the train goes above the
surface and goes through another tunnel.) Walk down Cole
past Haight St. to Fell, turn left, and then follow the
directions as above when you get into Golden Gate
Park.
