Who could get lost on a college campus? Depends on the map. Interpreting a modified aerial photo, I think, gives you the kind of experience of unfamiliarity you feel when navigating on a map in totally different terrain. I enhanced the map by adding a few fences, pathways through buildings, and buildings under the forest canopy. I emphasized many of the paths visibile on the photo.

The campus would be nice terrain for a "sprint" format event, and the participants enjoyed their loops. Each was about 1.2 km for a total of about 3.6 km. Again, the red flags were sometimes hard to pick out from the surroundings.

Those who reported their times for the 3 loops were in the 28 to 32 minute range.

A fun challenge, I think I will try an event like this again in a different area.

Original Announcement

A beautiful campus with nice landscaping, sculptures, and a river runs through it. Well, a creek. I'll make a simple map using the aerial photo with buildings and obstacles clearly labeled. And then a 3 or 4 loop motala course with some interesting decision making to do. Loops will be about 1.2 - 1.6 km each, total of about 5.0 km.

Details:

  • Cost is $5 per person.
  • Registration and starts open at 6:00, mass start option is 6:45, courses close 8:00, or earlier, if people are finished.
  • Gear: shorts and regular running shoes are fine.
  • Checkpoints are small pin flags!
  • Map will be 1:5000 scale, based on the aerial photo and USGS contours, with major obstacles and portals highlighted (buildings, fences, bridges, paths.)
  • Social option afterwards.

Directions:

We'll be meeting in classroom 10 in the Business building - BU-10.

Take California Highway 85 to the Saratoga Ave. exit, and head southwest on Saratoga Ave. Go about a half mile, then turn left at Fruitvale Ave. Very soon you will cross Allendale Ave., and you've reached the northwest corner of campus. Keep going on Fruitvale, and make a left turn to go into campus. The Business building faces Parking Lot 4, so that would be a good place to park.

Parking costs $2, and is payable only in quarters. Parking off campus is possible, but discouraging, with many signs saying no parking at certain hours.
