Still not done yet, but some things to check out:

1. Photos – the terraloco.com front page has them now for each
of the 9 days… see if you can find the ones with Vladimir and I hanging out at McLaren with our little friend the McLaren map spider. And lotsa finals photos.

Speaking of photos, please share yours with me, if you’d allow me to
post the link to the album – thanks!

2. Results – thanks to Toby Ferguson, Rosemary Johnson, and Chuck
Spalding for sorting and compiling the results, and to Tapio Karras
for posting the courses to RouteGadget.

The BAOC site has all the results and links to splits and RouteGadgets
here: NA Sprint Finals results
The terraloco.com writeup has links to these and some
narrative, and a table of the winners.
Jennifer Kerr was the only person on the short competitive category so
we included her in the “long” awards.

The Pt. Bonita RouteGadget should be up hopefully soon.

3. Speaking of mavericks… remember that post about the surfing competition, calling all y’all out? Well, ironically, it was a surfer from Santa Cruz (via Switzerland) who just showed up on short notice to nab the victory in the men’s open division… congratulations to Gabriel Lombriser. And Jarkko Laine, a visiting Finn who stumbled upon us, also upped the ante with the competition. Jonas Kjall, a Swedish doctoral student at UC Berkeley and Canadian Dr. Mike Smith rounded out the final four. Sadly Mike was unable to run the final due to an early flight.

4. Next in the pipeline (punintended:) Thank you acknowledgments, training camp writeups and results (some good sprints there too – thanks Ben Legg, Jonas Kjall, Magnus Johansson, Eric Bone) and the debut of the DVD.

Thanks to CHAOS, the Cal Hiking and Outdoor Society, for hosting the event. We joined them at LaVal’s Pizza for a fun social afterwards.

I created a Google Map! with all the venues, locations, dates, and times for the Golden Gate Getaway sprint finals and training camp events:

Golden Gate Getaway Google Map

You may want to use the Google Map to make your own custom directions for events you attend – each location is tagged, and you can click on it and select “Get Directions” then type in the address you’re coming from.

All the events, socials, and meetup spots are listed in chronological order, and important “times to be there” are included. So it’s a handy tool for getting around during the Golden Gate Getaway.

Note! The postcard flyer does not have the correct training schedule that you see in the current website and Google Map – so don’t use the postcard as your quick reference guide… An official quick reference guide is coming soon with narrative directions to each site and pertinent event information. It will be 1 or 2 pages and contain brief turn-by-turn directions to each of the 20 venues.

Also updated:
1. Schedule times are more precise.
2. Social venues have been determined.
3. Information about the Sprint Finals awards, designed and created by Benjamin Chan.

Cheers,

Schedule changes – training camp:

Golden Gate Park is now Monday morning
Morgan Territory is now Tuesday afternoon
Palo Alto Breakfast Run is now Thursday morning

Details, directions, registration areas, and timing have been updated for the events

Friday event: The bus with 36 seats leaves downtown SF Hotel Whitcomb by Civic Center BART for Pt. Bonita at 1:30 and returns from Pt. Bonita at 5:30, arriving back in SF about 6:15.

You must reserve a seat on this bus – first come, first serve – with preference given to out of towners who are not renting cars. Contact me to reserve a spot. Cost will be $8 roundtrip. FYI, this is subsidized – the cost of the bus is $15 a person _if we fill it_.

We have negotiated a good rate with the Hotel Whitcomb, which has nice rooms and sits in a stately, historic building literally on top of the Civic Center BART subway station on Market St. in downtown San Francisco. It is very conveniently located for attending the events. The group deal is $65 per room per night for 1 or 2 people, $80 for 3 people, and $95 for 4 people, plus taxes. Youth 17 and under are not charged with their family, but rollover beds are an extra $20 per night. Make reservations with Maria Bernard, the sales manager, rather than the front desk. When corresponding with Maria, mention the Golden Gate Getaway or Rex Winterbottom / terraloco to get the deal. Her email is Sales@HotelWhitcomb.com, and she may be reached by phone at 4 1 5 . 4 8 7 . 4 4 6 2. Nov. 4 is the cutoff date for this deal.

TBA:
Saturday night social dinner during the sprint finals will be at 6:00…

The first A-meet I attended was the 1995 U.S. champs in southern Michigan. Wow. Loved the maps and courses. Had a great time.

And my Mom, Grandma, and Grandpa came to watch. While there were no problems with the setup, with classic orienteering it’s just hard to see all the action in the woods. You can only imagine.

With sprint orienteering in appropriate venues, there’s massive spectating potential. And that’s one of the key features of the upcoming sprint finals.

That’s the arena at SF State. Looking at the opposite direction of the perspective of the photo, you would see much of the course happen across your eyes. And if you climb the student union to the observation deck you see at the top of the picture, you’ll have even more of a view of the course.

We are offering similar scale spectating opportunities at Pt. Bonita and McLaren. SF State will probably offer the most visual appeal. And in all venues, we’re doing our best to bring a crowd out to see and appreciate what you do. Cheering!
